Stretching from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, the magnificent multi-faceted Garden Route has become South Africa's most popular tourist destination after Cape Town, and it's not hard to see why. From Cape Town, the route reveals magnificent scenery, from mountain passes, wheatfields and fynbos and the chequerboard of farmlands until finally it meanders along a scenic stretch of Indian Ocean coastline. Visitors are drawn all year round to its magic indigenous forests, freshwater lakes, river mouths, estuaries, wetlands, hidden coves and long sparkling beaches. The narrow coastal plain is well forested and is mostly bordered by extensive lagoons that run behind a barrier of sand dunes and superb white beaches. |
