The National Trust Music Festival brings together in one splendid holiday a series of five first-rate private concerts given in a selection of grand country houses and churches by a distinguished array of international musicians.
Based in the historic market town of Buckingham we will set out to explore the surrounding countryside where there are an astonishing number of important houses
.
We will visit Claydon, the Rothschild houses at Ascott and Waddesdon, Canon's Ashby and Stowe Landscape Gardens.
THE ITINERARY & MUSICAL PROGRAMME:
20 August
Please make your own way to the hotel or to Milton Keynes railway station in time to be collected at 15.00.
We will stay for five nights at the Villiers Hotel in the centre of historic Buckingham.
The first concert will be given in the hotel before dinner.
Concert details: Wihan Quartet: Quartet No1 - Janacek; Quartet Op.76/3 - Haydn; Quartet Op61 - Dvorak.
21 August
We leave for nearby Stowe and enjoy a guided walk through the landscape gardens where the cool, elegant design of the park and its classical buildings have impressed visitors for three hundred years.
After the walk we will enjoy a concert in one of the pavilions.
Concert details:Wihan Quartet: Quartet Op64/5 - Haydn; Quartet No 2 - Smetana; Razoumovsky Quartet Op59/3 - Beethoven.
22 August
We visit Ascott House this morning, one of the three Rothschild houses in Buckinghamshire.
Here the collections of art, furniture and porcelain are exceptionally good.
This evening, at the Villiers Hotel, Barry Cheeseman will talk to Dame Josephine Barstow about her long and glorious career and to Simon Rowland-Jones about his new work 'A Turn Outside', written for Dame Josephine.
Concert details: The Prince's Consort: Brahms Sextet in B flat, Barber Adagio and Mendelssohn Octet.The concert takes place at the Parish Church of Buckingham.
NB:Tickets for this concert will also be available locally.
23 August
We begin our tour of Waddesdon before it opens to the public. We will find a superlative collection of French furniture, textiles and decorative arts from the 18th Century. After touring the house, there will be time to explore the gardens and the renowned wine cellars. In the evening we leave for Claydon House, still the home of the Verney family as it has been for almost four hundred years.There will be a tour of the house after it has closed to the public, followed by the concert in the Music Room.We will stay on for dinner afterwards.

24 August
Crossing into Northamptonshire this morning we go to Canons Ashby, the home of the Dryden family. This intimate house has an atmospheric interior with lovely Jacobean plasterwork.The concert takes place in the church, which is all that remains of the Augustinian Priory and has a wonderful acoustic.
Concert details: O Duo:Their programme will include a mix of popular classics arranged for two marimbas, vibraphone and percussion.
25 August
We drive to Claydon for the final concert of the National Trust Music Festival, returning to the hotel and to Milton Keynes railway station afterwards.
Concert details: Niel Immelman, piano, Alasdair Tait, cello, Katherine Gowers, violin:‘Works for Solo Piano’ - Suk and Novak; Sonatine - Dvorak (violin and piano); Fairy Tale - Janaceck (cello and piano); 4 Pieces - Suk (violin and piano); Silent Woods - Dvorak (cello and piano); Elegie - Suk (violin,cello and piano).
ACCOMMODATION
Hotel Villiers **** This historic hotel was Buckinghams's main Coaching Inn in the days of Cromwell. It is designed around a cobbled courtyard that once held 150 horses. Many original features remain and there are now 46 comfortable bedrooms, an atmospheric bar and an excellent restaurant.
